Your Opportunity: Be an Integrator Leader

Over the coming weeks, I will provide you with a series of blogs about successful management practices that business owners can practice. Here is the first one. Here, I show you the benefit of being an Integrator Leader.

A business owner I’ll call John, was frustrated with the amount of time he devoted to email. He didn’t have a solution to his challenge. This was compounded by the fact that John disliked asking anyone for help, including his business consultant. After conversation, John accepted the opportunity to be what I call and Integrator Leader.

An Integrator Leader is someone who engages their Team in crafting the Roadmap to a solution. She or he asks their team to be their operational advisor. In this way they gather their team’s insight, contribution, and buy-in.  The leader’s job is then to Focus on outcomes not just inputs, and to create a space and time for a purposeful conversation. The Leader’s role is then to coordinate, integrate, communicate what they come up with.

John had an administrative assistant and a part-time paraprofessional working for him. He held a meeting with them where he debriefed their email activities. He listened to what was working, not working, what they thought they could do differently, and what they needed from each other. They then collaborated and came up with an eight-point system that has resulted in them being not only more efficient but more effective as a team and for their clients, just by better managing email.
