The 4 P approach to One-On-One Conversations

Adapting the 4 P approach of public presentations for personal communication.

Jim is an insurance executive who has had great success with public presentations.  Yet his day-to-day rapport with peers and senior managers was not going well.  With his public presentations, Jim was taking great care to research the needs of the audience and then putting forth the time and effort to communicate with them effectively, with great results.  Jim was willing to look for ways to adapt this strategy for one-on-one conversations. The 4 P approach came to the rescue.

Jim decided that if he could

Plan, Prepare, Practice and Present (the 4 Ps)

well for large groups he could do the same when he wanted to successfully communicate one-on-one.  Jim is now:

  • Planning what he wants to say ahead of on-on-one meetings
  • Preparing for the meeting by gathering all the resources to support his point of view
  • Practicing what it is that he wants to say, and
  • Presenting what it is he wants to say, using all the stand-up presentation tricks he has learned over the years.

Today Jim is receiving compliments and is currently more efficiently completing his day-to-day responsibilities with the 4 Ps as his foundation.

QUESTION
