Ensuring Successful Task Delegation with 10 questions

Questions to self-monitor your progress for successful task delegation.

This is the sixth and final blog on delegation skills. It provides 10 questions you can ask yourself to self-monitor your progress on becoming a Delegation Champion!

Rebecca is a graphic designer with international clients and recognition for her designs. She works especially well with to-do lists and job aids. Here are 10 questions that Rebecca now asks herself when delegating tasks to her staff.

Have I:

  1. Selected the person who can best do the job based on their experience, knowledge, and maturity?
  1. Made sure that my expectations are understood clearly?
  1. Let them know that I believe in their ability to carry out the task?
  1. Secured their commitment?
  1. Established deadlines and milestones?
  1. Provided latitude so they can use their imagination and initiative?
  1. Let them know in the beginning that I will monitor progress – and that I have set up a process and reminders to do just that?
  1. Allowed them to tackle the job themselves – not doing it for them?
  1. Rewarded them for the results they produce?
  1. Discussed their work with sensitivity. Talked about what could have been done better (instead of what was done wrong), and how the job could be improved next time?

This process has allowed Rebecca to delegate 12 different projects to her staff that she was hard-pressed to do herself. She now has more time to work on her business strategy. She is more relaxed and having more fun with her business.

QUESTIONS

  • What projects do you need to delegate?
  • What will delegating allow you the time to do instead?
  • How do you need to reword these questions to ensure the success of the projects you want to delegate?
