When I’m deep in the trenches of my business, serving clients and rocking the marketing game, it’s a blast—I’m in the zone. But when it comes to working on the nitty-gritty of the business strategy, it’s not as thrilling. Left to my own devices, it might just slip through the cracks.

For me, the missing link was a structured and enjoyable approach, plus an external ally to keep me on track. So, here’s what I did: I teamed up with my strategy advisor, meeting face-to-face twice a month. Together, we tackle the business strategy like a project, kicking it off with solid groundwork:

The Purpose of My Project: Answering the question, “What’s my business shaping up to be on December 31, 2026?”

We delved deep, not just into the numbers but also the impact my business will have on my clients, my family, and me.

Intended Results of the Project:

  • A 2.5% boost in net income by service line.
  • A revamped organization with more hands on deck, complete with the necessary certifications.

The Project’s Scope: All about the business—putting aside my other dreams and aspirations for this one.

My Mindset: We made sure I’m riding the abundance wave and leveraging my strengths to make those project goals a reality.

Critical Success Factors for Staffing: Saying goodbye to a retiring executive assistant, bringing in fresh marketing talent, and adding a junior associate to the mix.

Resources: We combed through my IT services and support setup, brainstormed about potential additional resources, and left the door open for future needs.

Milestones: Starting at the end and working backward, we pinpointed major milestones.

  • Right before my goal is in the bag, I’ll be juggling staff management, client meetings, marketing moves, and tweaking the strategy as needed.
  • Just before that, it’s all about the recruitment hustle.
  • And just before that, I’m fine-tuning my marketing program.

With all this groundwork done, I can sketch out a realistic timeline for executing my strategy, with a clear view of all the action items in the pipeline. We’re crafting that roadmap as we speak.

For me, having someone structure my thought process is the game-changer. It lets me apply my strengths to each step and see the big picture in a tangible way. Now, I’m in the flow, having a blast with my business strategy.

So, what about you? What resources do you need to get into the flow with your business strategy?
